When the ancient Germanic people are mentioned, be it in conversation or a lecture or a book, the modern mind automatically goes to the Vikings with their horned helmets and their braided beards taking up their swords and fighting all the time; pounding their chests and
talking with these deep tough guys voices and the skulls of their enemy's hanging off of them. This all boys club mindset of the Germanic folk is detrimental to Asatru as in it puts in mind a filthy uncivilized being who knows or does nothing else but fighting; this is the furthest thing from the truth. Stephen Mcnallen describes Asatru "Asatru is a native European faith, comparable to Native American religion, native African religion, and other indigenous beliefs around the world. It's what our ancestors did for the thousands of years before they were converted to Christianity" and I believe this explanation is 100% accurate.
I explain Asatru as the indigenous religion of the Germanic peoples, it is the natural faith of the descendants of them. Asatru encompasses our relation with nature because it is what is natural to us. Dogmas are a foreign idea to us just as blind submission is. Though we are not a group of viking rein actors we are strong minded; courage is as valuable to us as money is to the megalomaniac. Our gods are the Germanic gods such as Wodan, Thunar, Fri, and Tiw and we do not worship them but honor them as our celestial kith and kin. Asatru is also our relationship with nature and this can be seen in our celebration of the year.
We celebrate the turning of the seasons and on certain days, typically the ninth of each month, we celabrate an honored hero. There is also the Sigr blot which is a blot done to Wodan for victory over our lifes obsticles and success in what we mean to accomplish. This is not a detailed description of our native way, this is a simple rundown just to cover the basics, for a more detailed description of our ethics, our gods, our ways of honoring the gods, and other important aspects then please read over the ther articles listed on the site. |
